Department Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Research & Innovation (OVPRI) promotes excellence in research at the University of Oregon. Research, both basic and applied, is fundamental to the mission of the University and is essential to Oregon's economic and civic vitality. The Office is committed to enhancing these efforts by providing administrative and financial support for sponsored programs, including identification of funding opportunities, proposal submission, research compliance, and contracts and grant administration.

OVPRI supports interdisciplinary research centers, and essential core facilities and emboldens innovation and economic development through strategic partnering and technology transfer initiatives. The UO has a long tradition of interdisciplinary research that continues through the production of new knowledge and innovative solutions to society's grand challenges.

Research Compliance Services (RCS) is the central research integrity office to help faculty, staff, and students navigate complex federal and state research compliance regulations so that innovative and collaborative research may flourish. RCS supports and protects the interests of the University, faculty, staff, students, and human research subjects in research compliance matter through guidance, education, and technical assistance.

RCS is responsible for the Human Research Protections and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) programs, Financial Conflict of Interest in Research (FCOIR), and Conflicts of Interest/Conflicts of Commitment, In addition, RCS provides administrative support in cases of alleged Research Misconduct and other research compliance matters, including Clinical Trials research regulations.
Position Summary

The Research Compliance Administrator 2 (RCA 2) is an experienced member of a team of professionals in the Research Compliance Services Office (RCS) who are dedicated to research integrity and compliance and excellent customer service to support UO research. The RCA 2 serves as a detailed subject matter expert in research compliance and integrity.

The RCA 2 is responsible for facilitating complex compliance reviews and maintaining essential regulatory documentation. This position must apply in-depth knowledge to evaluate and interpret materials for regulatory compliance and ethical best practices. This position contributes expertise, provides guidance, and supports the administration of the compliance committees, including the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects, UO's Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the UO's Conflict of Interest in Research Committee.

The RCA 2 participates in monitoring activities in support of the unit program areas. Responsibilities include developing and delivering trainings, conducting Post Approval Monitoring (PAM), and internal QI/QA initiatives to foster research integrity. The RCA 2 serves as a resource to the research community, research administration colleagues, and others stakeholders providing consultation via phone, email, and in-person. The RCA 2 has an existing wide breadth of regulatory and best-practice knowledge and is expected to maintain current knowledge and further develop content expertise in research compliance and integrity as the field evolves.

This is a full-time position and typically reports directly to an Assistant Director in RCS. This position may be assigned primary or lead work based on volume and unit needs. Responsibilities may be focused on one or more of the unit's program areas. The RCA 2 operates with independence in their daily work with minimal supervision and may serve as a project or team lead. The RCA 2 has the ability to synthesize complex compliance processes and communicate with campus constituents collaboratively. The RCA 2 will also provide coaching and mentorship to RCA 1 under the direction of an Assistant Director or a Senior RCA. The RCA 2 must adhere to established processes, procedures, and guidance based on federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies as well as best practices in research compliance and integrity.
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a fully accredited university or other institution of higher education.
    AND
  • Four (4) or more years of professional experience focused on research administration, research compliance and integrity, other regulatory compliance, and/or in an active research setting.
    OR
    Six (6) or more years of professional experience focused on research administration, research compliance, integrity, and other regulatory compliance in an active research setting.
    Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated proficiency and high-level technical expertise in a broad range of research administration areas, including but not limited to in-depth knowledge of the federal regulatory framework governing human subject research, conflicts of interest, research misconduct, and/or responsible conduct of research.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism; excellent organizational skills and ability to set appropriate priorities between multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize complex concepts and technical details and transfer them into written documents.
  • Demonstrated solutions-oriented customer service and ability to work effectively in a team-based setting; detail and outcomes focused.
  • Committed to advancing the University's goal of creating a facilitative environment for research and innovation while navigating an increasingly complex research compliance environment that demands specialized skills and abilities in satisfying federal, state, and university regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with research community, including faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified IRB Professional (CIP), Certified Research Administrator, or other related professional certifications.
  • Advanced Degree or demonstrated experience in public policy, law, research ethics, or related field.
  • 2 or more years of experience in any of the following:
    -Experience working in a research-intensive institution of higher education
    -Experience in an active research setting that included human subjects research
    -Experience working to review and/or manage conflicts of interest
    -Experience working with support programs for research integrity/responsible conduct of
    research
  • Experience with clinical trials.
  • Experience with FDA-regulated research.
  • Responsible for the conduct of research.
  • Experience writing and/or interpreting research policy.
  • Experience in a team-based professional setting and working with constituent groups.
  • Experience with Federal reporting criteria and submission systems.
  • Experience using database systems and managing electronic information.
