    The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) advances world-class research, scholarship, and innovation at the University of Oregon, a top-tier public research institution.     Position Summary

    The Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff (COS) to the Vice President of Research and Innovation is a member of the OVPRI executive leadership team and bridges from strategy and ideation to operations and execution. The person in this position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining strong professional relationships with key personnel, including other COS, in all areas of the University, including those reporting to the President, VPRI, deans, vice provosts, and other vice presidents. Primary responsibility is engagement, collaboration, and advocacy for the research enterprises across other leadership team portfolios to ensure OVPRI objectives are understood, supported, and met. Additional responsibilities will require management and coordination of central service units within OVPRI for increased efficiency in training, communication, and executive functions.

    Reporting directly to the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the COS is responsible for a highly varied and confidential portfolio, also serving as a key strategic advisor to the VPRI on both strategic and tactical matters. The COS organizes and directs regular and special leadership team meetings for the VPRI, and other executive leaders as needed. The COS collaborates with associate vice presidents to strategically develop and implement innovative portfolio goals in support of the OVPRI's initiatives. The COS will execute on the VPRI's behalf in a number of areas including finance and personnel functions.

    The position requires a demonstrated ability to learn, interpret and understand policies and procedures to apply to knowledge of university guidelines and operations. The successful candidate will have relevant experience working effectively with internal and external constituents, including advisory boards and committees, and the ability to think strategically while managing many complex issues. Applicants must have strong management abilities, and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as they will oversee and coordinate the majority of internal and external communications from the OVPRI. The COS handles many sensitive and confidential matters and must demonstrate good judgment, creativity, tact, and a commitment to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
    Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in business, administration, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of professional experience in financial and project management, and experience in a complex organization, with progressive administrative responsibilities and authority.
  • Three years of experience in a supervisory or management role with at least one direct report.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, manage projects and
    initiatives, and solve problems.
  • Understanding of financial administration skills.
  • Policy development experience.
  • Demonstrated coordination of research compliance or regulatory affairs functions.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills for both external and internal constituents.
  • Demonstrated skill in effectively working with people from diverse backgrounds, different cultures, employee groups, and cultivating the enhancement of diversity and inclusion within these demographics.
  • Demonstrated experience working with sensitive and confidential material and topics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (or similar scheduling/calendar program); Microsoft Office suite.
    Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree such as Ph.D. or JD.
  • Experience working at an executive level in higher education and an understanding of the nature of an R1 research university.
  • Understanding of UO and related organizational structures, policies, and procedures; emerging issues in higher education; and relevant essential rules, policies, and laws.
