DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Research Grants Program Office (RGPO) is a unit within the Research and Innovation in the Division of Academic Affairs at the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP). RGPO oversees a broad grantmaking portfolio of over $100 million a year to support research that is critical to California, the nation and the world. RGPO programs enhance UC's research capacity and excellence, which helps attract top faculty, graduate students, government funding and companies to our state. These grants enable researchers to collaborate and solve the most pressing problems in the state and the world. RGPO also provides grants for training undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral researchers, whose work will benefit California communities. Organizationally, RGPO consists of several systemwide and statewide grant-making programs, and administers special state and university research funds and initiatives with an integrated central operational unit that provides core administrative support for the grant-making enterprise.
The University of California Research Initiatives (UCRI) team within RGPO is responsible for the UC systemwide grant-making programs. The UCRI portfolio includes the Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives (MRPI), the UC-National Laboratory Fees Research Program (LFRP), the Cancer Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC), Multicampus Research Units, and other systemwide research initiatives. https://www.ucop.edu/research-initiatives/index.html
POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Grants Program Office (RGPO) invites applications for an Associate Program Officer (Program Officer 3) with research evaluation and data analysis expertise to join the UC Research Initiatives team managing a range of research grant making activities and special projects. UCRI seeks an Associate Program Officer with a passion for advancing the UC research mission through systemwide programs and a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity and equity in the research enterprise and the research workforce. Disciplinary expertise is open but should align with scope of the UCRI programs and complement existing UCRI expertise.
The Associate Program Officer is responsible for managing key aspects of the grant application and award cycles among multiple grant-making programs. The position offers exposure to, and engagement with, research across a range of disciplinary and topical areas as well as focused work on specific projects as assigned. Key responsibilities include serving as a point of contact for managing program communications; conducting landscape research and analysis to support development of new Requests for Proposals; collecting and analyzing program review and outcomes data; identifying and recruiting expert reviewers; managing intake and review of Letters of Intent, progress and outcomes reports; updating and disseminating external communications including website and newsletter content; and collating and maintaining key program procedural documents.

Required Qualifications
- Experience conducting and evaluating academic research, preparing research proposals, and evaluating research reports.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects with a proactive, results-oriented approach. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with initiative, and successfully manage complex projects.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and judgment. Advanced skills in analyzing information, identifying solutions, evaluating their implications, and formulating alternatives, particularly in relation to research management.
- Outstanding collaboration and demonstrated teamwork ability. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and mutually supportive working relationships with a range of internal and external colleagues and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated interest in and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in research training, research grantmaking, the conduct of research and in supporting the public benefit of research. Values diversity of background and perspective to enhance research and program outcomes.
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated ability to translating complex scientific concepts into everyday prose.
- Strong data analytic skills and training. Experience working with large data sets. Advanced knowledge of statistical analysis and facility with evaluation tools (like SciVal), and programming languages (eg python, R, or other coding) to facilitate portfolio-wide data analysis relevant to UCRI and RGPO programs.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent research training in discipline that complements team expertise. Broad exposure to research related to key disciplines in the UCRI portfolio, and willingness to contribute broadly across all areas of scholarship strongly preferred.
- Ability to assess research outcomes in fields outside of disciplinary expertise.
- Enthusiasm for supporting a range of research-related experience at UC or one of the UC-managed national laboratories a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high volume, fast-paced work environment.
- Facility with web-based databases and content management systems desirable. Facility with all commonly-used office software (eg: Outlook, WORD, Excel, Visio, Box) preferred.
Education
- Advanced degree in relevant academic discipline area and/or equivalent experience/training.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary: Expected hiring salary range is $100,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience.
