About the Opportunity:
The Laboratory Safety Specialist II (LSS-II) reports to the Laboratory Safety Program Manager and is tasked with maintaining laboratory safety programs associated with hazardous chemicals, equipment, and processes found in science, health science, and engineering research settings. The LSS-II will evaluate compliance activities, assist with collaboratively executing lab safety programs, and encouraging continuous process improvement efforts at all levels of education and research safety. Assume the day-to-day responsibilities of the Laboratory Safety Program in the prolonged absence of the Laboratory Safety Program Manager.

Responsibilities:
The LSS-II will possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively promote laboratory safety concepts (with an emphasis on chemical and process safety) at all levels of the education and research enterprise including regularly engaging with College Deans, Chairs, and Principal Investigators (PIs).

The LSS-II must be self-motivated, technically skilled, and able to effectively influence safety performance, execute change, and promote collaborative problem solving.

The LSS-II work includes the review of complicated research protocols, and risk assessments; assisting with the development and delivery of classroom and hands-on laboratory training; and overall lab safety consultation and outreach. Additional areas are development of lab safety resources; coordination of hazardous/chemical waste management generated in laboratories; maintenance of records; conducting comprehensive laboratory audits, assisting with the update of manuals, policies and procedures as directed by safety leadership, and assisting PIs with ensuring compliance with chemical inventory requirements and hazardous waste generation requirements in laboratories and storage areas located in research buildings.

The LSS-II will participate, as needed, with the Northeastern Emergency Response Team, and regularly be on-call outside of regular business hours to assist with the response to laboratory accidents involving chemical releases and will provide written evaluations of chemical spills and be responsible for restocking of supplies used in chemical spill clean-ups.

The LSS-II will update manuals, policies and procedures as directed by safety leadership, audit teaching and research laboratories, contribute to research protocol review, and assist with ensuring compliance with hazardous waste requirements in laboratories and storage areas located in research buildings.

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, engineering, applied health science, or other applicable degree required. Master's degree in one of the above areas preferred.

Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience incorporating applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and best management practices into laboratory operations.

Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience working in an EH&S office or similar compliance capacity involving regular engagement with laboratory personnel as a part of a safety audit program.

Demonstrated knowledge of environmental and hazardous material/waste principles as well as ability to understand and interpret complex written regulations and technical reports.

Demonstrated ability to evaluate research protocols using chemicals and high-risk laboratory equipment with the ability to discern the need for additional safety measures be built into the protocol. Capable of engaging PIs to ensure additional identified safety measures are included in the protocol before start-up. Preferred additional experience evaluating laboratory protocols using radiation active materials, radiation producing equipment, and biological materials.

Demonstrated knowledge of common processes, equipment, and chemical properties found in a laboratory setting. General awareness of process safety requirements in a research laboratory setting.

Ability to compile and present instructions as well as ability to clearly and concisely express ideas orally and in writing.

Excellent coordination and communication skills to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of teaching and research faculty, lab workers and other staff, and students engaged in high-risk activities.

Proficient at standard computer software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams and Outlook in performing work assignments.

Experience with or ability to learn and utilize a Learning Management System (LMS) such as, Canvas, or other data management platform such as BioRaft, to implement safety training and other safety program management needs.

Excellent customer service skills. Excellent time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects including the ability to delegate to direct reports.

Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as well as lift to 50 lbs.

Work in a variety of physical environments where hazardous materials or equipment are in storage or use.

Preferred Credentials:
Certification as a Certified Hazardous Material Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Safety Professional preferred.
